“From Darkness to Paralympic Glory: Rakesh Kumar’s Inspiring Story Documented by Dr. Ravinder Kumar”

A Source of Inspiration: A Rebirth – The Life Journey of Mr Rakesh KumarFor this study, researchers selected Indian Paralympian archer Mr Rakesh Kumar as the subject of investigation. Rakesh Kumar was born on 13 January 1985 in Katra village, Reasi District, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Katra is widely known as a religious town, and it was here that he spent his childhood. Before the accident, Rakesh Kumar worked as a plumber, earning a living through hard work to support his family. On 19 January 2009, while travelling to work, he was involved in a serious bus accident that caused a severe spinal cord injury. As a result, he lost the ability to stand or walk again. Following the accident, he was taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu, where doctors provided initial treatment and later referred him to Dr Hardas Singh Sandhu Hospital, Amritsar, for further medical care. After nearly 18 days of treatment, he was discharged with the medical conclusion that he would never be able to stand on his feet again. This incident completely changed the course of his life. In an interview, Rakesh Kumar explained that he felt as if darkness had taken over his life. He fell into deep depression and, during that difficult period, attempted to end his life three times. Fortunately, his life was saved on each occasion. After spending a long time confined to bed and a wheelchair, he started a small mobile recharge shop in front of his house in order to support his family. During this period, a significant turning point occurred on 23 June 2017. On that day, while he was sitting in his wheelchair under a tree outside his shop, Coach Mr Kuldeep Kumar Vedwan happened to pass by and noticed him. During their conversation, Coach Vedwan invited him to join the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Sports Coaching Complex to begin training in archery and assured him that he would guide and support him.Soon after, on 27 June 2017, Rakesh Kumar entered the sports complex and began training in para-archery. Remarkably, after just one month of training, he participated in the Second Para National Games, held in Hyderabad from 14–16 July 2017. Despite his limited preparation, he secured the 17th position. However, this moment became a turning point in his life, as he decided to work harder and continue moving forward. Throughout this journey, Coach Kuldeep Kumar Vedwan consistently guided and motivated him, encouraging him to keep practising even during difficult circumstances.Rakesh Kumar’s dedication and discipline were extraordinary. On several occasions he continued training despite personal challenges. At one point, he even had to travel for a competition on the very day of his wedding reception. As observed directly by the researcher, on one occasion despite heavy rain and a severe storm, he pushed his wheelchair himself and arrived punctually for practice.Through continuous training and strong determination, Rakesh Kumar achieved remarkable success at both national and international levels. He represented India at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Paralympic Games. In addition, in February 2021, he won a gold medal in the Men’s Compound Open category at the 7th Fazza Para-Archery World Ranking Tournament held in Dubai. His achievements continued to grow. In 2018, he was part of the team that won a gold medal at the European Circuit (second leg), and in 2019, he secured a bronze medal in the mixed team event at the 5th Fazza Para-Archery World Ranking Tournament. One of his most significant achievements came at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, where he won a bronze medal in the Mixed Team Compound event, bringing him international recognition. In recognition of his outstanding sporting achievements, he was also honoured with the prestigious Arjuna Award, one of India’s highest sporting honours. To understand the remarkable transformation in Rakesh Kumar’s life, Dr Ravinder Kumar, PhD (Assistant Professor, Higher Education Department, Government of Jammu and Kashmir) conducted a continuous three-year study on this case. His first counselling session with Rakesh Kumar took place on 5 February 2022. At that time, Dr Kumar was surprised to see such a transformation in him. He encountered a person who had once lost everything, struggled with deep depression, and had attempted to end his life several times, yet now stood before him with confidence, determination, and strong mental resilience. The study revealed that the most important factor behind this transformation was sport participation (adaptive sports). Sport not only restored his self-confidence but also completely changed the direction of his life. The guidance of Coach Kuldeep Kumar Vedwan played a crucial role in this journey. Through constant encouragement and training, he helped Rakesh Kumar rebuild his confidence and pursue excellence in sport. Symbolically, just as Lord Krishna guided Arjuna in the Mahabharata, Coach Kuldeep Kumar guided Rakesh Kumar in the modern era, helping him emerge as a true “Arjuna” for India.Today, Rakesh Kumar lives a content and fulfilling life. He views his disability not as a weakness but as a source of motivation. His goal is to continue competing in major international competitions, particularly the Paralympic Games, with the ambition of winning a gold medal for his country. This inspirational study on Rakesh Kumar’s life and psychological rehabilitation has been published in the internationally recognised journal Sport Sciences for Health (Springer Nature), based in Italy.
